Four Employment Directions for Major of Life Sciences

The quality of medical education in North America is recognized worldwide. There are many international students who choose Life Science majors in overseas studies. Is it feasible to study medicine in North America? Are there any other employment directions? Gashenhui special guest will share with you the questions of North American medical science.

The most popular subject categories among North American Chinese are generally science, business, and life sciences. Among them, the employment direction of life science graduates is relatively broad and can be divided into 4 categories:

Healthcare Professional School: A large proportion of undergraduates choose life sciences in order to become medical practitioners later. These include medicine, dentists, pharmacists, nurses (some schools can be admitted directly from high school), physical therapists, and more.

Graduate students in scientific research: This is also a general direction after life sciences graduation, and generally requires master’s and postgraduate studies. After that, you can stay in universities or research and do academic research, or do some clinical research in pharmaceutical companies / biotechnology companies.

Education: There are also some fresh graduates who choose to pursue master of education to become a teacher, or start their own private tutoring institutions.

Others: In addition to the above three general directions, other career options are also very wide. Some graduates will study other majors (such as law school, finance, computer, etc.), and then work in biological companies or start their own businesses.

The process of studying medicine in North America is relatively long. Some people find that investing more money and energy is longer and the cycle is longer. It is not the first target for many international students.

I think the environment for practicing medicine in North America is relatively ideal, the income is relatively reasonable, and the doctor-patient relationship is more harmonious.

Let’s talk in-depth about the process of learning medicine with interested parents and classmates here.

Canada has 16 medical schools, 13 English colleges, and 3 French colleges. For Canadian students, except for Quebec and Queen’s University of Ontario, other schools need some undergraduate results to apply (for example, Alberta requires 2 years of undergraduate, other schools require 3-4 years of undergraduate results).

For overseas students, the more friendly admissions policies are the University of Toronto and McGill University. Therefore, overseas students must be prepared to apply for American universities when applying (there are many schools, the application procedures are the same, and the tuition is not much more expensive than Canada).

Some aspects to pay attention to when applying for medicine are undergraduate grades (grades are the most important! The admissions office will not review your application if the grades are
not enough), MCAT (medical college admission test, which generally meets the standards), application essays or personal statements, resumes, and Other extra-curricular activities (volunteers, award-winning experience, publication of articles, etc.).

When is the best time to start preparing for an application? We mentioned that undergraduate results are the most important, so we need to pay attention from the first semester of freshman. In other words, when you apply for a university, you need to pay attention to which university you are applying for and which are good for improving your score. At the same time, you still have plenty of time to participate in extracurricular activities and accumulate contacts and social experience.

Let me give you an example. We have 2,500 freshman Biology classes in Toronto. On the first day of class, we all watched and wanted to enter the medical school, but no more than 70-80 people entered the medical school directly after graduating from senior year. Less than 15 of them entered Toronto Medical College after undergraduate (and some other primary schools have 20-30 undergraduates directly into Toronto Medical College (7 at York University). The proportion of enrollment and the competitive pressure of undergraduate period everyone Think about it.

Undergraduates in Canada are generally lenient and strict, not to say that it is not easy to graduate, but how to better study and gain employment after graduation. So having a beautiful transcript and a glorious resume is still an essential stepping stone. To sum up, no matter what employment direction is chosen in the future, the time planning of the university is still very important and must not be abandoned.
